In communist Cuba, you don't choose your career, it's assigned to you. That's how young Ozzy found himself placed into construction. But what started as a government mandate soon became a passion, especially once he discovered structural engineering.
"I didn't like construction at first," Ozzy admits. "But in my third year of study, something clicked. When I started learning about structure and layout – about how buildings actually work – I was fascinated. I spent nine years studying structural design and construction management, not because I had to, but because I wanted to understand everything."
Growing up in a tiny farming village of just 28 families, Ozzy learned the value of community and genuine care – values that still shape his approach today. "In my village, everybody helped each other. There was very little self-interest. We were poor, but we had everything we needed because we worked together."
At 27, Ozzy arrived in America with this unique combination of intensive engineering education and deep commitment to community. Starting as a field engineer on major projects like the Marlins Stadium, he developed precision skills few residential builders possess.
"On commercial projects, precision matters down to 1/8 inch over 100-foot spans. That level of accuracy, that engineering mindset changes how you approach every project. When other builders see problems, we see solutions waiting to be engineered."
In 2007, Ozzy launched his own company. But unlike most builders who simply manage trades, he saw an opportunity to do something different – to use his engineering expertise to solve problems other builders couldn't.
"At first, I followed the standard route," Ozzy explains. "But I kept seeing the same thing: clients would come to us with flawed plans. The architect had missed something. The engineer hadn't accounted for existing conditions. While other builders pointed fingers or suggested compromises, I found myself fixing these issues. Not because I had to, but because I could."
This pattern led to a revelation that would transform his approach: "If I'm already solving these complex challenges mid-project, why not get involved earlier? Before the shovel hits the dirt? That's when we can really make a difference for our clients."
